High Country Humane is more than a shelter. We are a lifeline for animals and the people who love them throughout Flagstaff and Coconino County.
Every day, animals arrive at our doors needing a safe place to land. Some are lost and waiting to be reunited with their families. Some have been abandoned, neglected, or surrendered. Some need extensive medical care, behavioral support, or a quiet place to heal. Others simply need someone to take a chance on them.
But our work doesn't stop when an animal enters our shelter.
In 2025 alone, High Country Humane cared for 3,232 animals, including thousands of stray animals and 154 animals involved in cruelty cases. More than 2,000 pets were cared for through our foster program, and 1,780+ animals found new homes through adoption. Our life-saving outcomes reflect what is possible when a community comes together to give animals the care, time, and resources they need.
While saving lives inside the shelter is the heart of what we do, one of the most powerful ways we can save lives is by helping pets stay out of the shelter in the first place.
Your support makes programs like these possible:
- Pet Food Bank: Last year, we provided more than 45,000 pounds of pet food to low-income households, helping families keep their pets fed and at home.
- Affordable Care: Our low-cost vaccination and spay/neuter programs help families access essential care that might otherwise be out of reach.
- Community Cats & TNR: Through Trap-Neuter-Return and our Community Cat/Barn Cat programs, we provide humane solutions for cats who thrive outside traditional homes while helping address the community cat overpopulation.
- Foster Care: Foster families give shelter pets the space, individualized attention, and time they need to thrive while opening valuable kennel space for the next animal who needs us. We provide our fosters with food, supplies, support, and medical care during the entire foster period.
- Emergency Response: When Northern Arizona communities face wildfires and other disasters, High Country Humane can provide temporary emergency sheltering for owned animals displaced by mandated evacuation.
- Support for Families in Crisis: We provide resources to help people navigate challenging circumstances, including re-homing assistance, training advice, pet food assistance, and compassionate end-of-life care.
These programs represent something bigger than individual services. They help prevent surrender, reduce suffering, reunite families, keep pets healthy, and give animals more opportunities for a loving future.
Your Gift Fills the Gap
Funding from the City of Flagstaff and Coconino County provides the foundation for our contracted animal welfare services, including caring for stray animals and housing certain cruelty, abuse, abandonment, and other cases.
But that funding does not cover everything it takes to fulfill our mission.
More than half of the funds necessary to operate High Country Humane are raised through private support, including donations and bequests, special events, and adoption fees. Your generosity makes it possible for us to do more than meet the basic requirements of sheltering animals. It allows us to invest in lifesaving medical care, foster support, community programs, preventative services, enrichment, emergency response, and the many needs that arise every day in animal welfare.
When you make a gift to High Country Humane, you aren't simply helping us care for one pet today. You are helping build a community where fewer animals reach a crisis in the first place.
🐾 You are helping fill a food bowl for a family experiencing financial hardship.
🐾 You are helping a family keep their beloved pet because they can access basic, affordable, veterinary care.
🐾 You are helping a lost dog or cat find their way home, to the families that love them.
🐾 You are helping a shelter pet receive medical treatment, behavioral support, foster care, and the opportunity to find a forever home.
🐾 And when disaster strikes, you are helping ensure that animals aren't left behind.
Your generosity today gives High Country Humane the ability to say "yes" when an animal needs us most.
A Community Effort. A Lifesaving Mission.
High Country Humane exists because our community believes that animals deserve better.
Since opening our doors in 2019, we have worked alongside animal lovers, foster families, volunteers, veterinarians, donors, businesses, rescue partners, and local government entities to build a stronger animal welfare system for Northern Arizona. Our work is made possible by people who believe that every animal matters and that supporting pets also means supporting the people and communities who love them.
A donation of any size makes a difference. A significant gift can help us plan ahead, respond to emergencies, expand lifesaving programs, and continue building a stronger future for animals across Northern Arizona.
Thank you for believing in High Country Humane, believing in the pets we serve, and investing in a community where every animal has the opportunity to thrive.
